Summer vacation is the perfect time to take new car offerings out for a spin. Editors husband-and-wife duo Liz Kim and Christian Wardlaw recently took their kids on a road trip to Yosemite and Sequoia National Park in a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. They embarked on a five-hour drive from their home in L.A. and a tour of California’s majestic nature views, and recently gave us their thoughts on this all-new Chrysler minivan.
Chris and Liz took a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica in a Touring L trim, with optional eight-passenger seating and the Uconnect 8.4 system. For extra cargo space, they folded the third-row seats flat, which gave them 87.5 cubic feet of space for everything they needed over a three-day road trip. However, Chris tested the third-row seats before handing the Pacifica back, and he said they were remarkable comfortable. The third row is plenty spacious for grown adults for hours of travel. Plus, the third row has its own USB charging port, so no need to share with the siblings in the second row. If you need to haul even more stuff and no kids, the second row folds down as well, yielding a whopping 140.5 cubic feet of cargo space.
Over the course of their trip, the Pacifica proved to be an amazing family hauler. The tall windows are perfect for a sightseeing tour. Plus, the classic sliding doors mean your kids won’t bang into the car next to you in a crowded parking lot. The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica also has lots of cupholders and charging ports in every row, perfect for collecting your water bottles and coffee cups on any road trip. It also has lots of pockets and bins to stash your camera, snacks, and toys. Both parents also noted that the Cognac/Alloy/Toffee interior color scheme is great at hiding dirt and detritus. The Pacifica also offers an available Stow ‘n’ Vac cabin vacuum for easy cleanup. Liz also mentioned that the Pacifica boasts an amazing climate control system that kept them all cool even as California temperatures spiked above 100 degrees. The windows also have pull-down shades to keep the sunlight off both rows of rear seats.
If you often travel down long, uninteresting stretches of road and need to keep the kids entertained, the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica offers an available Uconnect Theater. Dual 10.1-inch HD touchscreens flip up on the back of the front seats to provide movies and games to rear passengers. Each screen has a Blu-ray player, HDMI inputs, Bluetooth remotes, downloadable games and apps, and wireless headphones so each seat can enjoy their own sound. You can also option on the available 20-speaker Harman Kardon premium surround sound system for the whole family to enjoy. The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica offers an optional navigation system and satellite radio, too, so you’re never lost or without your tunes.
The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is also a great performer. The Touring L model that Chris and Liz tested had a satisfying steering weight and demonstrated crisp turns and competent body motion control. The 3.6L V6 engine produces 287 horsepower to accelerate your big haul to quick speeds while maintaining great fuel economy. If you want to feel even more planted on the road, the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Limited trim gets upgraded touring-tuned suspension and wider, lower-profile tires. Chris, having now driven both the Limited and Touring L trims, noted that the Limited definitely felt more athletic, and had some truly impressive ride and handling abilities. But the mid-level trim Touring L is no couch potato, either.
On their trip through high altitudes and hot weather, Chris and Liz both enjoyed the consistency and power from the Pacifica’s brakes and powertrain. The engine provided plenty of oomph to climb over 6,000 feet in elevations changes with four passengers and all their stuff. On the way back down, they both reported that the brakes never faded and were easy to modulate. The nine-speed transmission easily handled the mountains climbs and highway drives for a smooth, easy ride. Both drivers also reported that the rotary transmission dial is their favorite modern shifter style, and the Pacifica’s is neatly set aside from other dials and buttons.
