2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon: Record-Breaking Power and Performance

Alexis Austin Forest Lake, New Vehicles, News

The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon has arrived in a cloud of tire smoke and smashed records. This car has been teased for close to a decade now, but making this kind of insane power road-ready has taken some time. The Dodge Demon is designed specifically to dominate drag races everywhere, yet still be legal on the streets. Dodge officially unveiled its creation last week, and the figures are as bonkers as promised.

First of all, it has 840 horsepower. Yep, it’s officially the most powerful muscle car ever. The 6.2-liter Hemi Demon V8 engine, which is not so much hiding under the hood as lying in wait, produces 770 lb-ft of torque and has a higher rev limit of 6,500 rpm. This means 0 to 60 blows by in 2.3 seconds. You’ll pull 1.8 G’s doing it, but it’ll happen in 2.3 seconds. 0 to 30 only takes 1 second. The quarter-mile drag is over in 9.65 seconds, reaching 140 mph. To recap, that makes the 2018 Dodge Demon the fastest production car in the world to 60 mph and to the quarter-mile finish line.

It also pulled a 2.92-ft wheelie. No big deal.

Dodge has put a lot of technology into this Demon that’s never been seen on a production car before. It runs on 91 octane fuel on the road, but it’s also designed to run on track-ready 100+ octane fuel. You also get a Torque Reserve system to deliver an extra punch at launch. To get the most out of that crazy engine, Dodge has outfitted the Demon with a liquid-to-air charge air cooler chiller system to go with the massive “Air Grabber” cold-air-intake on the hood. Even the headlamps double as air-catchers to feed the supercharged engine. Dodge also says that every customer who buys the Demon gets a full-day session at the Bob Bondurant School of High-Performance Driving. This is one class you definitely shouldn’t skip, considering the NHRA has technically banned the as-is Demon from the drag strip. In order to race it at full steam, you’ll need to upgrade the roll cage and get a competitive driving license. The 2018 Dodge Demon is just too fast for mortal men.

Dodge has made the surprising decision not to offer a manual transmission at all. The Demon will come with an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Some folks are less than pleased with that decision, but Dodge has made several upgrades to make up for it. It includes an upgraded torque converter for an 18% increase in torque multiplication. The stall speed and lockup speed have also increased. It’s also the first production car to have TransBrake, which holds the car in place before a standing start. This means that you can rev the engine up to 2,350 rpm at your standing start without overwhelming the brakes. You get a much quicker launch with this system, and it cuts out the chance that you’ll slip on the clutch and mess up the start that’s designed to leave your competition in the dust.

To perfect that drag time, the 2018 Dodge Demon is also the first vehicle to come out of the factory with drag radial tires. The Nitto NT05R drag radial tires are exclusively for the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon — you can tell by the little demon face branded into them. The Demon also features lightweight 18×11-inch aluminum wheels. The new Brembo brakes are lightweight, too, with slotted two-piece rotors. Lots of pieces of this Challenger were dropped or made lightweight to make this a better drag racing car. The passenger and rear seats, for example, don’t come standard. (But you can option them back in for only $1 apiece.)
