The new all-wheel drive GT trim has finally arrived on the 2017 Dodge Challenger. This new configuration makes the Challenger GT the first and only all-wheel drive American muscle coupe. As a segment first, the GT is only available with one powertrain at the moment. With the AWD configuration, you get the 305-horsepower 3.6L V6 engine and the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. This faithful FCA engine propels the Challenger GT from zero to sixty in 6.3 seconds, and finishes a quarter mile in 14.8 seconds. The traction control technology also lets it retain an EPA estimate of 18 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway. And outside, the Challenger’s iconic silhouette is unchanged: there’s no mistaking the look for anything but classic American muscle car.
Most of the time, the Challenger GT operates in rear-wheel drive only, but there are a few different ways to get all four wheels involved. The traction control computer will automatically switch to all-wheel drive if it detects wheel slippage or dropping external temperatures. It also kicks in when you open up the throttle to pass, or when you put the Challenger in Sport Mode. You can also manually switch the AWD on from either the paddle shifters or the console shifter. The GT comes standard with Dodge Performance Pages. This feature lets you select settings for the engine, transmission, steering, and throttle response. You can also use it to activate launch control to help give you fast, seamless acceleration in a straight line.
The GT handles snow with admirable control and traction. It shows no issues accelerating or braking on snowy test tracks in Maine, especially with Electronic Stability Control engaged. If you’re a confident driver and you want to push the Challenger faster, the ESC can be disabled. The all-season tires provide plenty of grip for speedy yet confident driving. Although the GT is only available with the eight-speed automatic transmission, you can equip steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. AWD may seem far more sensible than the muscle car legacy has ever wanted to be, but the Challenger GT will still manage some well-controlled slides if so desired. The extra grip from the front wheels will make the Challenger more accessible to enthusiasts who normally drive on unreliable road surfaces. It finally brings classic muscle car fun to a year-round audience.
The Challenger GT starts at $34,490 and comes with lots of standard features and technology. It has the Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen display, a rear back-up camera and rear park assist system, Keyless Enter n’ Go, and Dodge Performance Pages, among other things. It’s also compatible with your smartphone through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. A one-year subscription to SiriusXM Satellite Radio and Guardian services is also included. And if you’re considering the GT to get you through snow and ice in style, you’re in luck: it also comes standard with heated leather front seats and a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Challenger hasn’t sacrificed any interior room with this configuration — it still seats five with 94 cubic feet of passenger space and has 16 cubic feet of trunk storage. Not only can you take the Challenger GT to new places with AWD, you can still feel free to bring your friends and gear with you.
