The famous Jeep Wrangler got an all-new update this year, and it looks better than ever from every angle. This new model comes in three different versions: the Sport, the Sahara, and the Rubicon. To test out the all-new street-oriented 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, MotorTrend editors took it for a spin!
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara represents a perfect balance between two opposing buyer demands: off-road excellence and street-oriented cool factor. Of the three models offered this year, the Sahara focuses on luxury amenities and street performance. While the Sport and Rubicon models are available with either two or four doors, four doors are standard on the Sahara. It also comes with street-oriented tires, chrome accents, and body-colored fender flares. You’ll have a long list of options as well, including the Sahara-exclusive Selec-Trac full-time four-wheel drive system. It’s perfect for drivers who want Jeep’s four-wheel-drive capability for inclement weather and road conditions, not necessarily for rock-climbing.
Apart from the optional Selec-Trac system, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara has the same standard powertrain as the other 2018 Wrangler models. A retuned 3.6L V6 engine pairs with a standard six-speed manual or an optional eight-speed automatic transmission. The Sahara gets 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, although there are two more optional engines. A new 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine makes 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, and there will be a 3.0L turbodiesel V6 joining the lineup next year.
As for the Wrangler’s performance, the new model shows off its ten years’ worth of engineering improvements. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds, a dramatic improvement over the outgoing JK model. It’s more efficient than before, too, with an EPA rating of 18 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The Sahara offers a better ride than the outgoing Wrangler, as well; it’s straightforward yet forgiving, with well-weighted steering. If you’re looking for a livelier drive, the new eight-speed automatic transmission shifts quickly and unobtrusively. It’s also happy to hold onto a lower gear to give you extra speed on a hill or during passing.
The new Wrangler’s interior is quieter than ever with the new transmission, as well, which lends to the more upscale feel of this Sahara model. With available leather trim, heated seats, and an optional hard top and hard top headliner, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara’s cabin is a premium yet practical place. It’s designed with high-quality leather, soft-touch plastics, and comfortable, supportive seats. The modern infotainment system also got an upgrade, and give you all the connectivity and smartphone compatibility you expect from a 2018 model.
The Sahara is still perfect willing to do a little off-roading, too. MotorTrend’s test drive also explored California’s Hungry Valley off-road recreation area with the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. Jeep’s highly capable four-wheel-drive system still shines in its ability to push past a variety of terrain types and obstacles. Although the Sahara doesn’t have locking differentials like the Rubicon does, it easily climbed a steep, heavily rutted hill with loose-packed dirt and mud, as well as other obstacles. Overall, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara has finally struck a balance, and presents a Jeep that’s nice to drive on the road and confidently goes adventuring, too.
