Now that the LA Auto Show is underway, there’s new information and photos of the upcoming 2018 Jeep Wrangler! Hopefully, we’ll see first-drive reports and more pictures and details after the show. Until then, here are some of the official details we do know about the upcoming Wrangler JL.
There have been a lot of rumors about the available engines in the new Jeep. The familiar 3.6L Pentastar V6 is still the standard engine. It makes 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, but Jeep says that it’s more fuel-efficient than the current model. It’s also paired to an all-new six-speed manual transmission, or an eight-speed automatic. The options list includes a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine that produces 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Perhaps most exciting of all, there will be a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 available on four-door Wrangler Unlimited models in 2019. It’s rated for 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque, and paired to a unique version of the eight-speed automatic. To help improve the Jeep’s fuel economy, the 2.0L turbo will reportedly get an alternator-based mild hybrid system. Plus, a plug-in hybrid Wrangler will reportedly appear in 2020!
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited are a bit bigger than their predecessors, although they’re about 200 pounds lighter. The two-door Wrangler is 2.8 inches longer, while the four-door is 3.8 inches longer. They’re only 0.2 inches wider, but the wheels are farther apart, giving the 2018 model an extra 2.5 inches of track width. The wheelbases have also stretched by 1.4 inches on the two-door and 2.4 inches on the four-door. Rubicon off-road models have fenders that are two inches higher than the other trims. In order to accommodate a Warn winch, the off-road trim also has steel bumpers. The Sahara trim is supposed to get body-colored fenders, just like the current-generation Wrangler.
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler also has some new standard features. 33-inch BF Goodrich KO2 all-terrain tires are standard, and there’s an optional two-inch lift kit to accommodate 35-inch tires. There will be a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with an available 8.4-inch upgrade. Push-button start is also standard now. To many enthusiast’s delight, the windshield is not only removable, it’s much easier to fold than the outgoing Wrangler. A roll bar goes over the 2018 Jeep Wrangler and comes down at the A-pillars. A piece of the roll cage actually hosts the rear-view mirror and sun visor, so they stay put when the windshield is folded or removed. The new, lightweight aluminum doors also come off, and the Wrangler’s roof will be available in a wide range of configurations.
