If you’re looking for a tough, hard-working pickup, the 2017 Ram 1500 has surely crossed your mind. In case you’re having thoughts about taking home a Toyota Tundra instead, here are some reasons you should stick with America’s longest-lasting pickups. You’ll get durability, capability, performance, and iconic looks that you can’t get anywhere else.
These two trucks do have some similarities. They’re both offered with three cab configurations, three bed lengths, and they offer two or four-wheel drive. They also both have several trim levels so you can get all the features you need. However, the 2017 Ram 1500 is quite a bit more customizable. It starts out with more aggressive looks than the Tundra, and each trim level gets its own grille design. You can choose to keep it simple or make an impressive entrance with chrome or blacked-out looks. The Ram 1500 also comes in a wide selection of colors, plus a bunch of cool special edition exterior colors and packages. The Ram Rebel offers an off-road option, too, so you can take a Ram to an off-road job or a weekend adventure.
The 2017 Ram 1500 also offers three engines. At the base level, you get a 3.6L V6, which gives you 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. It gives you plenty of power to tow and haul, and it’s rated for 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. A step up gets you the 5.7L V8 HEMI, and 395 hp. It also gets 410 lb-ft of torque, which lets you tow a max load of 10,620 lbs, and load up with a 1,880 payload. Or you can option a 3.0L turbodiesel V6, which gets 240 hp, 420 lb-ft of torque, and better mpg than the HEMI. The 2017 Ram has options to cover whatever you need most in your pickup. Meanwhile, the Toyota Tundra only offers two V8 engines. The base 4.6L engine offers 310 hp and 327 lb-ft of torque, but overall the two base models deliver a similar performance. The Tundra also suffers noticeably when it comes to mpg: the 4.6L V8 gets 15/19/16 mpg, and the 5.7L V8 falls to 13/18/15 mpg. When the Ram 1500’s HEMI makes 15/21/17, the difference is pretty noticeable, and the Tundra doesn’t have a diesel option to stretch your trips between gas stations.
Ride quality on the 2017 Ram 1500 wins out, too. When you’re in a truck for the long haul, it makes a huge difference to have a smooth, quiet ride. The Toyota Tundra transfers a lot of bumps and road imperfections into the cabin. The Ram, on the other hand, has rear coil springs that give it the smoothest ride in its class. It also offers a great four-corner air suspension system that helps with load-leveling while you’re towing. The Ram’s interior is top-notch. The folks at Ram know that you’re going to spend a lot of time in the cabin, so it’s made with premium materials and attention to detail. It’s made to be as comfortable on the inside as it is rugged on the outside. Every surface is luxurious, yet durable enough to stand up to the Ram’s everyday work. The Tundra has updated its materials recently, but it doesn’t have the same priority toward driver comfort. The top trims of the Tundra get luxurious, but it doesn’t have the same attention to detail as the Ram 1500.
There are lots of features that put the 2017 Ram 1500 ahead of the Tundra, as well. The Ram’s cargo bed is a big step up: you can get a factory spray-in bedliner and integrated gooseneck hitch, among other options. It also has the RamBox storage system, whereas the Tundra doesn’t have much besides its deck rail system with four tie-down cleats. The Ram’s infotainment system is easier to use, too. The Uconnect system is available with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, and it offers navigation, apps, a Sprint 3G tether, and a wifi hotspot. You can also option on a 7-inch configurable gauge cluster, a DVD player for front and rear passengers, and a reclaimed-wood interior trim. Ram offers almost twice the number of trim for the 1500 as the Tundra has, ranging from work to off-road to luxury. It’s easy to find the perfect Ram 1500 for your lifestyle, but with more limited options, it’s harder to find a Tundra that will suit you perfectly.
